Most fans are familiar with the New Teen Titans team of the 1980s.
Using the name Changeling, Gar became a founding member.
The stories were written by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, and art was
by George Perez. After George
Perez left, the next few artists tried to maintain the character styles
he set down. He set the bar for artists to come. Many
Titans artists are still compared in quality to Perez.
After
Perez, in many of the comics, Gar's coloring seems... off. He goes from
a more emerald green to a sort of yellow-ish green. It's not known if
it's the
colorist, the printing process or the aging of the comics. Later
on
this seems straightned out and Gar goes back to his deeper green color.
"Baxter edition" refers to a
specific point where many of the popular comics were shifted over to a
special paper (called "baxter paper"). Most comics at that time
were on a lower quality, lower costing paper. These "baxter
editions" were only available at comic stores and for many comics, the
book then "split" into 2 series (the inexpensive comic became "Tales of the New Teen Titans" while
the "baxter edition" started the numbering over again at #1 and
continued as "New Teen Titans"
- until "Teen" was dropped from the name later on). Tales of the New Teen Titans
continued on with a few new issues, then began reprinting the stories
from the "baxter edition". Eventually the cheaper paper versions
were dropped... and comics became hard to find outside of bookstores
and comic stores.
