Tan Eng
Huat Doom Patrol
Tan Eng Huat, IIRC,
hails from Malaysia. His art often
inspires debates across the Doom Patrol forum as whether or not
it could be considered "manga-style" or "manga-influenced." Several
manga expert friends of mine quite definitely call his work "Southeast
Asian Style," and say that there is actually quite distinct differences
between it and manga (which specifically refers to comics from Japan).
For my taste, Huat's rendition of Gar tends to be too straight line. One frequent complaint is that, if you take away the coloring and hair of the characters, they all look the same. You be the judge. Click here on Doom Patrol for some more scans of Gar in a Doom Patrol story featuring a flashback with Gar. It's one of the better moments for Huat ![]() ![]()
