Huat vs McKone vs Murakami

2003 has seen Gar fall into the hands of three different artists. First we have Gar as done by Tan Eng Huat, artist of the current Doom Patrol. Next is Gar as rendered by Mike McKone, who will be drawing the newest incarnation of the Teen Titans comic. Finally, there is Glen Murakami, the so-called person in charge of the Teen Titans cartoon.

Remember, opinions below are my own. Your opinions may vary.

Tan Eng Huat, IIRC, hails from Malaysia. His art often inspires debates across the Doom Patrol forum as whether or not it could be considered "manga-style" or "manga-influenced." Several manga expert friends of mine quite definitely call his work "Southeast Asian Style," and say that there is actually quite distinct differences between it and manga (which specifically refers to comics from Japan).

For my taste, Huat's rendition of Gar tends to be too straight line. One frequent complaint is that, if you take away the coloring and hair of the characters, they all look the same.

You be the judge.

Click here on Doom Patrol for some more scans of Gar in a Doom Patrol story featuring a flashback with Gar. It's one of the better moments for Huat (scroll down to the bottom of the page).

Mike McKone will be taking the responsibility of drawing Gar and the rest of the Teen Titans. His work tends to be closer to the traditional comic book stylings we're familiar with.

The new costume McKone designed for Gar is going to take a bit of getting used to - and from what I've seen in back issues, Gar's arms are quite a bit hairier than the way McKone is showing. At least he's drawing Gar with some muscle definition, as opposed to Huat...

NO I AM NOT DROOLING ON MY WIZARD PREVIEW!

I reserve that for the plastic covered extra issues of the Beast Boy mini series that I just got in a comic book lot I purchased on Ebay.

Glen Murakami has had the... honor... of being the person in charge of the Teen Titans cartoon.
While I'm not averse to a cartoon version of Teen Titans, and I would love the idea of an anime inspired Titans... Murakami has obviously not been watching the series with better quality drawing (such as Vampire Princess Miyu, Bastard!!, and anything done by CLAMP).
